Labour migration has caused significant demographic changes and it has also resulted into reduction in rural agricultural output in Nigeria. Due to male out migration, most agricultural production activities are dominated by women and older men who heavily depended on manual labour. Hence, this paper will attempt to review the current thinking about changing gender roles, and its encumbering effect on women’s agricultural productivity and sustenance. It will also seek to proffer solutions to the problems of women who particularly bear the brunt of labour shortages. However, relevant rural development policies that will ease the burden of rural women need to be enacted and implemented by the government. Appropriate user-friendly, labour and time saving devices that can reduce drudgery should be provided for rural women as well to enable them to increase their rural agricultural production, and adequately meet their household consumption needs.
